Poor Posture

Most people already know their posture isn’t ideal. What fewer understand is that posture isn’t simply a habit your body has fallen into. It’s a reflection of the cumulative loads, injuries and stresses your nervous system has organised your body around.

Posture is dynamic

Your spine is constantly and intelligently adapting to the demands placed on it. Years of desk work shift your head forward and round your upper back. Old injuries that weren’t fully resolved leave protective patterns in the muscles and fascia. Chronic stress keeps the shoulders elevated and the breath shallow. Over time these physical habits become structural.

This is why trying to “stand up straight” doesn’t work for long. Your nervous system reverts to what it knows because the underlying pattern hasn’t changed. Willpower can temporarily override the posture, but it can’t rewrite the nervous system’s map of how the body should be held.

Meaningful postural change requires working with the nervous system itself, helping it develop a new map of where your body is in space, and better managing the loads on your spine.

How we approach this

Your first visit includes a postural check as well as an in-depth analysis of the spinal tension patterns your body is holding on to.

Network Spinal helps your nervous system develop a more accurate and complete sense of spinal position, and a more conscious awareness of it. The precise contacts along the spine release the core tension patterns holding you down, allowing your body to naturally realign and straighten up.

What people notice

Postural change is often one of the most visible and unexpected outcomes of care. Family or colleagues often notice you’re holding yourself differently. You feel taller, straighter and easier in your body. You notice you’re no longer reminding yourself to sit up.

Common questions about posture

For many people, yes. Posture is how your nervous system has organised your body around years of desk work, old injuries and stress. Network Spinal works with that pattern directly. As the tension patterns release, your body can realign on its own, without you having to hold it there.

Because your nervous system goes back to the map it knows. You can hold yourself straighter for a while with effort, but as soon as your attention moves on, your body returns to its default. Lasting change comes from the pattern itself shifting.

They can be a useful reminder, and some people find them helpful for a while. They hold your body in position from the outside, so the pattern underneath doesn’t change and your posture tends to slip back once you take them off. We work with your nervous system so the new position becomes your default.

No. Even posture built over decades at a desk is a pattern your nervous system has learned, and it can change. Many people who come to Lifewise in their 40s, 50s and beyond find themselves standing taller and moving more easily.

Yes. Under stress your shoulders creep up, your chest tightens and your breath gets shallow. When that goes on for months or years, it becomes the way your body holds itself. That’s why we look at stress as well as the hours you spend at a desk.

Everyone is different. Postural change tends to build gradually, and family or colleagues often notice it before you do. We’ll give you a straight view of what to expect after your first visit.
