Back Pain

Back pain comes in many forms. For some people it’s a sharp catch that stops them mid-movement. For others it’s a steady ache that’s been part of life for years. Understanding what’s going on, and what’s driving it, is the first step towards addressing it effectively.

Why back pain persists

Acute back pain, after a fall, an awkward lift, or a sporting injury, often settles on its own within a few weeks. But the back pain that hangs around for longer, months or even years, often with repeated acute episodes but never fully resolving, is chronic pain.

This chronic quality matters. It tells us the nervous system has become part of the story. What began as a local tissue injury has settled into a pattern, and the body has learned to keep the pain signals switched on, often long after an original injury has healed. The pain is real, but it’s driven by a nervous system stuck in protective mode.

Muscle and spinal tension builds slowly in layers over time, caused by old injuries, poor posture, too much sitting, or even unprocessed stress. The area becomes stiff, less flexible and things that used to be easy get harder.

Addressing back pain well requires more than treating where it hurts. It requires working with the nervous system directly, helping it recognise that the protective response is no longer necessary and gently encouraging it to let go.

How we approach this

Your first visit begins with a thorough history including any imaging you’ve had, previous treatments and what you’re experiencing. We’ll assess your spine to see how well it’s moving and where tension patterns are being held. We’ll explain what we find before any hands-on work begins.

Network Spinal works particularly well for back pain because it addresses the nervous system dimension, the protective patterns, rather than just the mechanical picture. We use gentle, precise contacts along your spine to release stored tension rather than imposing change. No cracking, no twisting, no force. Over time the protective patterns ease, movement and flexibility return, and the body resumes its own work of healing.

What people notice

People who come to Lifewise with long-term back pain often describe progress not as a sudden resolution but as a progressive loosening. The pain is less intense, episodes are shorter, and it feels less consuming. Your nervous system calms down and learns to resolve its own tension. Many people also notice better sleep, easier breathing, and standing taller without thinking about it.

This makes sense once you understand how the nervous system works. As the tension held in the spine begins to release, the effects ripple outward, into how you move, how you rest, and how you carry yourself through the day.

Common questions about back pain

For many people, yes. Back pain that’s been around for months or years usually involves your nervous system as well as your spine. It has learned to keep the pain switched on. Network Spinal works gently with both, helping your body let go of the protective pattern it’s been holding.

No. There’s no cracking, twisting or force at any point. Network Spinal uses light, precise contacts along your spine. Many people come to Lifewise because they don’t want their back cracked. If you’ve had a bad experience before, please mention it when you arrive.

More about gentle chiropractic

Most back injuries heal within a few weeks. When the pain hangs around for months, it’s often because your nervous system has settled into a protective pattern. The muscles around your spine stay braced and the pain signals stay switched on, long after the original injury has healed. That pattern is what we work with.

Both can help, and many people see both at different times. Network Spinal works with your spine and nervous system, the part that governs how your body holds tension and protects itself. We aim to take the pressure off the joints and tissues so pain can resolve. Physio is useful for exercise programs. If we think another approach would suit you better, we’ll say so.

It can add to it. Under stress the muscles along your spine tighten and stay that way. Over months that tension builds in layers alongside old injuries, posture and too much sitting. Many people notice their back flares when life gets busy. That’s why we work with your nervous system as well as your back.

It depends on how long the pain has been there and what’s driving it. Many people notice a change within the first few visits. Pain that’s been around for years usually takes longer to shift. We’ll give you a straight view of what we think would help after your first visit.

No referral is needed. If you’ve had X-rays, an MRI or seen a specialist, bring the results. We don’t routinely take X-rays at the first visit, but we can request them if they’re needed.
